Kendrapara, Feb 19 (LocalWire) Paddy collection in all the 9 blocks of Kendrapada district have been affected this Kharif season due to unseasonal rainfall.
Odisha State Civil Supply Corporation (OSCSP) had planned to purchase about 6.64 Lakh quintals of paddy from the farmers this harvesting season.
The latest data of paddy production is lower than last year so far, district supply officer, Rajanikanta Das said.
We are hoping more farmers to sell paddy within the stipulated date of 31st March”, he said.
“Untimely rain and pest attack are the major reasons for low output this season”, said Umesh Chandra Singh, a farmers’ leader and the President of the district unit of Krusaka Sabha.
Large number of farmers across the remote and inaccessible riverside villages of the district are being forced to make distress sales of paddy due to non- construction of bridges and non- availability of proper road connection , resulting in huge financial losses for them.
“ Distance to the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society being far away is a major reason for selling the paddy, said Sabuj Mandal, a farmer of Batighar .
“Reaching the main market at Mahakalpada and Ramnagar with bags of paddy in a boat everyday is impossible.
We also have to cross two creeks and a river in taking the paddy to the market, so we prefer selling it to the Businessmen at a lower price who come near the river Ghats“, said Bikali Jena a farmer of Kansarabadadandua.
