Berhampur, Feb 2 (LocalWire) Khallikote Cluster University has planned for set up a center to train students on preventive conservation of palm-leaf manuscripts and paper documents.
“Urgent preventive conservation of palm-leaf and other old manuscripts are needed in the state before they get destroyed,” said vice chancellor of the university AN Mishra here on Saturday.
Misra said this on the sidelines of the two-day national workshop on “Protecting Cultural Heritage: Preventive Conservation of Palm-leaf Manuscripts and Paper Documents” here.
The workshop was organized by Khallikote Cluster University, in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science and Research, New Delhi here.
“We are exploring funds from various sources for the center, where students of different departments like library and information science, mass communication and media technogy and travel tourism and hospitality management will be trained about the preventive methods of the manuscripts,” said Misra.
“We will discuss with experts before chalking out the plan for establishment of the center,” he said.
As many as 45 participants of seven states, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Telegana participated in the workshop, said Jyoshna Sahoo, head of department of library and information science, and coordinator of the workshop.
In the workshop different aspects on preventive conservation of manuscripts, including identification of causes for deterioration of the palm leaf, modern preservation technique and emerging treatment of manuscripts were discussed.
