Bhubaneswar, Sept 29 (LocalWire): Aggressive behaviour of elephants keeping vigil on a sick female adult of the herd in the dense forests of Bhuyan and Juanga Pirh forest range in Keonjhar district, is putting Forest officials trying to bring it back to health, in danger.
‘We are trying to administer medicine to the sick elephant but the herd of four elephants led by a tusker is guarding her and chasing the staff and veterinarians,’ said Ajit Kumar Satpathy, Divisional Forest Officer, Keonjhar forest division.
‘Yesterday, veterinarians from Similipal Tiger Reserve along with wildlife staff with utmost difficulty reached the spot where the elephant was lying in distress.
It was administered viral dose and is recovering fast,’ he added.
It is not infected with Elephant Endothliotropic Herpes viruses as it was deliberated in some quarters.
The female elephant is around 22-years-old and the deadly EEHV attacks juvenile elephants.
As per the preliminary diagnosis, veterinarians think it has been afflicted with a viral ailment which is curable, the DFO said.
The team of STR veterinarians will administer viral doses later today.
Utmost care is being taken to ensure their safety and to save them from the herd’s attack. The skilled service elephant squads are accompanying them to the forested area, the official added.
