Kendrapara, July 17 (LocalWire): The 12-hour bandh called by VHP, Bajarang Dal and associations of businessmen in Kendrapara district today paralysed normal life.
Shops and business establishments were closed and vehicles were off the roads.
Bus services were also affected due to the agitation.
The bandh was called to protest against police inaction to nab miscreants who shot at senior BJP leader and vice-president of district unit of VHP, Vivekananda Moharana on Saturday night.
20 platoons of police were deployed to keep vigil in the sensitive areas and the district administration appealed to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony.
‘Cooperation among police officers and general public is required to stop any incident breaching peace,’ said Rajiv Lochan Panda, the SDPO, Kendrapara.
‘It was a historic bandh as traders and locals cooperated with us and came on to the streets.
Today’s bandh showed that the people of Kendrapara will not tolerate any attack on innocent people,’ said Banambar Sahoo, the president of the district unit of VHP.
The protesters organised rallies and sit-ins at important junctions.
The agitators blocked the national highways and state highways at various places in the district by squatting on the main roads and not allowing even private vehicles to move.
The bandh supporters, however, kept the patients, doctors and medicine shops out of the ambit of the bandh.
