Baripada, July 14 (LocalWire): Villagers of Balikhota contributed funds and employed labour to have a bridge built across the Kharkhai river, due to alleged neglect of the cause by the district administration.
Prahalad Purti, a local resident, said that the villagers of Balikhota had been forced to contribute assistance to erect the bridge over the river on Tuesday as the local administration including Block level officials and the local Sarpanch did not provide any help.
More than 50 people of the village provided money for labourers and materials for the erection of the bridge across the river.
The villagers were unable to commute between Bankati and Mayudhar panchayats since the 73 years of the independence.
Children of Bankati were unable to attend classes at their school for the past three to four months during the rainy season as the river swelled up.
In case of emergency, the villagers had to carry patients on cots as there was no bridge to cross the river.
Even buying medicines and essential commodities, or going to the police station and market at Suleipat had become difficult for the villagers.
“From our own contributions, we finally erected a bridge with a cost around Rs. 1.5 lakh,” said Jitrai Baskey the head of Balikhota village.
