Berhampur, March 10 (LocalWire): Stories of riches, a better life and an opportunity to work abroad lured several villagers to Dubai as construction workers.
Now, barely two months into the job, their dreams have been shattered by miserable living conditions and non-payment of salary and they want to return home.
As many as 42 labourers from 12 villages of Khallikote and Beguniapada blocks in Ganjam district went to Dubai to work in a construction company.
One of them came back to the village to narrate the sorry state the labourers are in. The owner has not paid them their salary and they are also not allowed outside the premises.
On Thursday, several family members complained to the district labour officer, Chhatrapur, and requested him to find a way to bring back the labourers safely home.
‘We conducted an inquiry and found that the men had gone to Dubai through a labour agent.
The report has been submitted to the state labour commissioner and district administration,’ said DLO, Siba Narayan Sahoo.
‘We are very worried seeing their condition through videos,’ said Uttam Biswal of Kairasi village.
‘My son has no money in the foreign country, as the owner of the construction company did not pay them,’ he alleged.
‘They are working overtime and the owner of the company does not allow them to go outside,’ said Nabin Nahak, whose son
Ramesh is one of the victims.
