Paradip, September 26 (Local Wire) – Nearby irate villagers paralyzed construction work of ongoing projects at Paradip refinery of IOCL on Wednesday during an eight-hour-long protest blockade staged to press the demand for the erection of drainage system to discharge waterlogged rainwater from farmlands.
Hundreds of villagers Rangiagarh, Chunbellari, Kutukula, Biswali, Kothi, Siju, Lunukua, Bagadia, Jhimani, Dalimbpur, Chandinipada, Nuashai demonstrated economic blockade at Rangiagada bridge on IOCL road Wednesday morning demanding discharge of stagnant water from their farmlands and also supply of drinking water through pipe water scheme to mitigate acute drinking water crisis.
Villagers alleged the drain water of IOCL is connected to local Niharuni river that has caused disruption of smooth water flow to the river due to silting.
Two years ago, the local administration held a meeting involving all stakeholders including refinery officials to find out alternative solutions as per the demand of the nearby villagers.
Villagers demanded the drains of IOCL refinery connected to the local river should be cleaned. They also demanded erection of drainage system and supply of piped drinking water.
During the day, local administration accompanied by local police officials conducted meeting with IOCL officials and village chiefs to resolve the pending issues.
IOCL officials gave assurance to clean Niharuni river within seven days for smooth discharge of stagnant water from nearby farmlands and committed to supply drinking villages within two months.
After the assurance, irate villagers lifted the blockade in the evening.
