Kendrapara, May 29 (LocalWire): Veteran Odia film actor Bijay Mohanty, 70, has been hospitalized in a private hospital in Hyderabad after he complained of chest pain on May 25.
Residents of his native village Pandiri on the outskirts of Kendrapara town are praying for his quick recovery.
A large number of villagers on Thursday organized a special Puja in the Laxmi Narayan temple at the village for the early recovery of Mohanty.
The villagers have been keeping an eye on news regarding his health and want him to recover soon.
Chandrasekhar Mohanty, a resident of Pandiri said, “The entire village loves Bijay Mohanty. We want him to recover soon and visit his village.”
Sarat Das, another resident of the village, said, “I have fond memories of the time we spent together during childhood. I wish him a speedy recovery and a long and healthy life.”
Padmalava Mohanty, was effusive in his praise of the actor, saying he had made the village proud by achieving so much.
“We hope he recovers soon and visits his ancestral village. We have watched many of his films, and we love his outstanding performances,” said Padmalava.
“We are proud that our village is the birthplace of Bijay Mohanty,” said Arun Mohanty, another resident of Pandiri.
Bijay Mohanty has made tremendous contributions to the Odia film industry. Mohanty graduated from the National School of Drama with classmates like Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Om Puri etc.
He was a theatre artist and stayed in Delhi till 1975, after which he returned to Odisha and devoted himself to directing plays.
In 1977, he began his career in the Odia film industry with the film Chilika Tire which won the National Award that year.
Naga Phasa, Samay Bada Balaban, Danda Balunga, Sahari Bagha, Chaka Bhaunri and Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi are some of his most notable films. He has performed in various roles ranging from hero, villain, comedian, character roles etc.
Some of his television serials aired on Doordarshan include Asara Aloka, Sri Jagannath, Subhadra, Sara Akasa, Samaya Chaka, Sakalara Apekhya Re, Nadekhile Loka Dekhe, Mahayagyan and Bidhatara Khela.
Mohanty unsuccessfully contested elections for the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat in 2014 as a Congress candidate.
His wife Tandra Ray is also an actress in the Odia film industry. The couple have been cast opposite each other a number of times. They have one daughter.
