Jagatsinghpur, June 20 (LocalWire): Villagers of Tentulibellari of Balikuda block have seized 1600 liters of kerosene alleging that it was being illegally supplied to a prawn ghery.
Kerosene sanctioned under the Public Distribution System was allegedly diverted to a prawn ghery after deduction of said kerosene from the fixed quota of PDS consumers.
Eventhough the civil supply department has directed PDS dealers to supply 5 liters of kerosene to each cardholder every month, many dealers have allegedly deducted 500 ml to 1 litre kerosene from the quota of each cardholder in order to sell it on the open market at higher rates.
Villagers of Tentulibellari under Balikuda police station have detained one pick up van in which PDS kerosene was allegedly being supplied to a prawn ghery of Balikuda and Erasama areas.
Nearly 1600 liters of kerosene were seized from this pick-up van while the driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot.
Later, villagers informed civil supply officials and the police, at which the officials rushed to the spot accompanied by the police personnel.
Civil Supply officials led by Additional District Civil Supply Officer Pradyumna Kumar Routray, Assistant Civil Supply Officer Sallaudin Khan, and the Marketing Inspector of Balikuda block Aruna Swain have begun an investigation in the alleged illegal supply of kerosene.
After getting a report from police, the civil supply department will take action against errant dealers who have been involved in this racket, they said.
Meanwhile, Balikuda police have registered a case against unidentified persons for illegal supply of kerosene.
Locals have alleged that hundreds of prawn gheries are mushrooming in Balikuda and Erasama area and that there is a nexus between PDS dealers and the owners of these prawn gheries.
They allege that PDS dealers are selling kerosene to prawn gheries at black market rates while deducting the same kerosene from the supply system.
