Berhampur, Sept 8 (LocalWire): A 28-year-old man in Chhanameri village under Ganjam district’s Digapahandi police station was allegedly attacked, tonsured and paraded for allegedly looting an idol from Mahadev temple today.
Police rushed to the village and rescued the man, identified as Sudarshan Choudhury, said additional SP (Berhampur) P Ch Routray.
A case has been against some villagers though no one was arrested yet.
Choudhury was admitted to a hospital at Digapahandi for treatment.
He is now in police custody and his condition is stable, the officer added.
Police said Choudhury stole the ashtadhaatu Parvati idol from the temple today evening, when no one was around.
He initially denied stealing the idol but later agreed to return.
After a thorough search, police found the idol in the backyard of his house where he had buried it.
Angry villagers attacked him and tonsured his head.
Police suspect Choudhury to be mentally ill and he might have stolen the idol as an act of mischief rather than to sell it in the market.
‘We are investigating the matter,’ said the ASP.
Meanwhile villagers performed ritual to re-install the idol in the temple.
