Sambalpur, September 20 (LocalWire): The dialysis unit at the nephrology department premiere Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla suffered extensive damage following the outbreak of a major fire, early morning on Friday.
According to official sources, the fire brigade personnel were able to douse the fire in a half-hour operation and stopped it from spreading to the wards where patients were admitted.
The authorities detected the fire after they saw a thick layer of smoke billowing from the equipment room. The inferno had triggered major damage to the unit by the time the fire was doused.
An electrical short circuit from the air conditioners might have led to the outbreak of the fire, fire brigade personnel stated.
They also pointed out the unit did not have mandatory fire extinguisher facilities.
While an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the mishap has been initiated, fire safety measures are being put in place to prevent recurrence of such fire mishap, medical college authorities said.
