Berhampur, April 11 (Localwire): Polling in several places in Ganjam and Gajapati districts was affected on Thursday morning due to malfunctioning of the electronic voting machines (EVMs).
People were seen waiting in long queues under the scorching sun after the EVM defects at poll stations.
In some places, voters have returned without casting their votes. “I was waiting for one-and-half-hour after the machine broke down. So I returned, but I will come back to vote in afternoon,” said a voter.
Confirming the cases of EVMs defects, senior BJD leader and food supply minister Surya Narayan Patro said that he received complaints of malfunctioning voting machines from Digapahandi and Berhampur areas, and he telephoned the district administration to repair or replace the machines immediately.
A senior polling official said that a technical team is being sent to the affected polling stations to look into the matter. However, polling was incident-free in most places, he added.
In Ganjam, around 10.7 lakh eligible voters will cast their vote in the district. The voting is being held at 1,117 booths across five assembly segments.
In Gajapati district, 573 polling booths have been set up in two assembly segments. Around 4 lakh voters will cast their votes.
More than 60 candidates are in fray in the first phase of poll in the two districts.
