Bhubaneswar, Dec 31 (LocalWire) With majority of the Opposition, including Congress, standing against the passing of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Triple Talaq Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has extended its support to the bill.
“We support the centre’s Triple Talaq Bill and want it to be passed as soon as possible in the Rajya Sabha. However, there should be certain amendments,” said BJD’s Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya.
Acharya said the BJD had earlier sought three amendments in the bill, including removal of three years jail term and imposition of fine on violators.
“The Centre made the amendments and tabled it in the Lok Sabha,” he said.
“This is not a political issue. There is no point in delaying it. The Centre should take suggestions from opposition parties and present the amended bill for discussion in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament itself,” said Acharya.
Pertinently, the Triple Talaq Bill, passed in the Lok Sabha on Dec 28, seeks to criminalise instant divorce. According to the bill, triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) in any form, including spoken, in writing or by electronic means like email, SMS and WhatsApp, is illegal and void. Violators can face jail term and/or penalty.
