Sambalpur, September 2 (LocalWire): The local police today arrested a history-sheeter who was wanted in 14 criminal cases from near Danupali police station area in Sambalpur city after an exchange of fire.
The arrested criminal, 32-year old Musim Akhtar, who is facing charges in cases including murder, extortion, robbery, illegal arms possession and organised crime syndicate, had let loose a reign of terror in Sambalpur and adjoining areas.
Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid at the Akhtar’s hideout, when the miscreant opened fire at the police team. The police fired in retaliation and Akhtar was injured in the shootout that lasted for about five minutes.
“An assistant sub-inspector was also injured in the firing by the miscreant,” Sambalpur superintendent of police Kanwar Vishal Singh said.
A 9 mm loaded pistol was recovered from the possession of the arrested criminal. Another criminal, a close accomplice of Akhtar, however, managed to escape.
The shootout took place at about 5.20 am, police said.
