Bhubaneswar, September 11 (LocalWire): A hardened criminal wanted in over two dozen criminal cases was grievously injured during wee hours today following an encounter with the police patrol squad in CDA Sector 13 area in Cuttack city.
The history-sheeter, Budhia Das, opened fire at the police team when patrolling squad tried to intercept him.
The police also opened fire in retaliation with the gun battle lasting for over five minutes.
A motorcycle, one country-made pistol, and two live cartridges were seized from the possession of Das.
Das, who was running an inter-district gang of criminals, was wanted in about 30 criminal cases including an attempt to murder, extortion and illegal arms possession.
He was also an active member of Tito-led gang of criminals, the police said.
The injured criminal has been hospitalised and is stated to be out of danger.
It may be recalled here that the police had arrested three hardened criminals in Puri and Sambalpur district yesterday following similar encounters.
