Kendrapada, March 29 (Local Wire): At a time when the government has been stressing the citizens to regularly wash their hands with soap and water to fight COVID 19, several water-stressed villages of Kendrapara district are struggling to comply with government directives.
A number of villages in the district which are hit by the escalating water crisis are finding it a Herculean task to get adequate water to gratify their thirst and basic needs while it is becoming extremely tough for them to wash their hands regularly.
A number of villagers in the district are hit by depleting ground water level, defunct tube wells besides the additional stress of ingress of salinity into the ground waters.
Rajkanika, Aul, Mahakalapada and Rajnagar blocks in the district are most hit as hundreds of villagers here are left with no option but to travel for few kilometeres to fetch water despite the lock down in place.
Residents of Jagannathpur, Pundal, Akhua, Narasinghpur , Bedari, Jagadalapur, Patkura and other villages have been facing the problem of contaminated drinking water for the last six months due to wrong laying of sewerage system.
Niranjan Sethi, Additional District Magistrate of Kendrapara on the other side said that the ongoing mega water supply projects can solve many of the woes of the water stressed villages of Kendrapara.
He also added that the local authorities have been asked to provide clean water and repair the defunct tube wells in the affeted areas.
