Berhampur, Feb 26 (LocalWire): Weightlifter K. Ravi Kumar, a Commonwealth Games champion from Odisha, bagged a gold medal on the 5th day of the senior National Weightlifting Championship held at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.
Ravi, an Arjuna award winner and hails from Berhampur, lifted a total 342 kg to win the gold medal in the men’s 89-kg category.
Harshad Wadekar and R.V. Rahul won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
A total of 32 atheletes participated in the competition.
In the Commonwealth Games in 2010 (New Delhi) and 2014 (Glasgow), Ravi won a gold and a silver medal respectively.
He started his career as a weightlifter in Veer Hanuman Circus and Physical Club here in 2003.
He received the prestigious Arjuna award in 2011.
He was also the first Odia weightlifter to participate in the Olympic Games in London in 2012. He had finished sixth in the competition due to a shoulder injury.
In recognition of his contributions, the state government offered him a police job, with the rank of a DSP, which he still continues.
