Sambalpur, Dec 11 (LocalWire): A wild elephant trampled to death a 50-year-old farmer and injured a woman today in a forest-side village in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
The incident occurred in Ichhapala village under Jujumura forest range of Sambalpur forest division jurisdiction. The victim Nirajan Bhoi was guarding his farm when the elephant trampled him to death, forest officials said.
Another woman who had gone into the nearby forest to collect fuel wood was also attacked by the pachyderm. She is undergoing treatment at Sambalpur district headquarters hospital and is stated to be out of danger.
The village is close to elephants’ habitation corridor and the animals often stray into the fields leading to frequent outbreak of man-elephant conflict.
The next of kin of the bereaved family will be provided Rs 4-lakh ex-gratia financial aid as per rule prescribed for death due to attack by protected animals, added the forest officials.
