Bhubaneswar, Dec 12 (LocalWire): The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) today initiated a probe into the recently unearthed pangolin smuggling cases to ascertain whether the wildlife offences were linked to international smuggling rackets.
Two pangolin smuggling cases were busted this month in Athgarh forest division. The smugglers had taken the online route to smuggle out pangolins, accorded protection under Schedule 1 of Wildlife Protection Act.
‘Suspecting the poachers having an international link, the state forest department had earlier sought bureau’s intervention to curb online smuggling of pangolin.
The probe panel arrived here today furthering its probe in a specialized way,’ said Sasmita Lenka, Divisional Forest Officer, Athgarh Forest Division.
‘We have found proof of a smuggling network that is being operated through the internet. Therefore, the stepping up of web-patrolling in close coordination with the forest department is the need of the hour,’ she added.
