Berhampur, October 15 (LocalWire): The Baidyanath Pur police on Tuesday arrested a 27-year old woman on charges of impersonation and for duping Rs 1.70-crore from people in Berhampur.
The woman presented herself as the head of Odisha Central Electrical Authority (CEO) and lured investors by promising a high rate of interest.
The accused Madhusmita Mohapatra of Rambha in Ganjam district was arrested by a special team of Cuttack police, Berhampur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Bishnu Prasad Pati said.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that she duped around Rs 1.70-crore from the investors, mainly the senior citizens from Berhampur during the last two years.
The victims lodged police complain against her when she failed to pay the interest and return the principal amount.
“We have registered a case against her based on the complaint of Tripura Prasad Rath and fifteen others,” Baidyanath Pur inspector-in-charge Sarada Prasanna Das said, adding that the police is further investigating the case.
Police said the accused was a highly educated person and was recently selected as a lecturer.
