Jagatsinghpur, May 31 (LocalWire): Several women groups have taken up the cudgel to check the illegal liquor trade in Jagatsinghpur district.
The activists claim police and excise officials have failed to check the illegal country liquor trade flourishing in the villages of Gadharishpur panchayat.
“Illegal liquor is sold openly, even in betel shops. Still, there is no action against them.
As a consequence, the unruly scenes have increased in the villages. Children are afraid to go to school,” an activist said.
In the recent past, the Jhansirani Mahila Mahasangh had raided dozens of places in the villages and had seized huge quantity of illicit liquor. The organisation had also lodged an FIR against several accused.
It is alleged that in 2018, a drunken person had raped and murdered a nine-year-old girl in one of the villages of Gadharishpur panchayat.
In 2017, the group shot to fame after it burned down a liquor shop in Garia village.
Over the past few months, it had damaged some 20 country liquor shops under the Gadharishpur panchayat.
The Mahasangh has alleged that some corrupt officials are in hand in globe with the liquor traders which is keeping the illegal trade alive.
