Bhubaneswar, August 12 (LocalWire): It was an exhilarating experience for children and wildlife enthusiasts who braved the rains today to be able to look at the elephants at Nandankanan Zoo from hand-shaking distance.
The pachyderms, held in captive but ambient environs of Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP), were specially treated to coconuts, banana, sugarcane, maize, grapes and apple as the zoo authorities observed World Elephant Day to promote the preservation of these national heritage animals.
The mahouts were also felicitated for their hard work in taming and domesticating the elephants, said Jayant Kumar Das, Deputy Director, NZP.
The day was observed with a mass awareness programme among the visitors with a message for elephant conservation, he said.
‘I had never come so close to an elephant. I caressed its trunk and offered bananas. It gladly ate out of my hands. It later twirled its trunk round my head,’ said Sabita Acharya, a school student from Barang.
