Bhubaneswar, June 17 (LocalWire): Chief Spokesperson of the state government on Coronavirus Subroto Bagchi said that targeting migrants especially those returning from Surat had been setting a wrong example.
“Several people and the media use targeted words like ‘Surat Returnees’ for the migrants and attributing the pandemic to them which is a wrong notion.
Such acts add to the stigma associated with the disease,” he said.
He also said that migrants have all legal rights to live in dignity and move from one place to another.
“They also have equal rights like other citizens. People need to understand that they were not the originators of the pandemic but they became victims of the disease.
Their rights are secured by the constitution and they should not be discriminated against during the pandemic time,” he said.
He also said that the stigma and social discrimination are more often hit the most vulnerable sections of the society-the poor, women and kids. He asked media organisations to report responsibility to avoid any harmful effect on the lives of patients and health care workers.
